The Differential Geometry studies the geometric properties of curves, surfaces and their generalizations, the differentiable manifolds, using the techniques of calculus. It is an area of mathematics that has strong interaction with other areas of science, since its inception, with cartography, passing through the Theory of Relativity, until today, which is increasing the study of topics related to Analysis and Physics. The research group of Differential Geometry of the "Instituto de Matemática" of UFRJ is mainly concentrated in two major subfields, Riemannian Geometry and Symplectic Geometry.
